Pilot Officer Thornton was one of two airmen who lost their lives in the crash of 8 SFTS's Harvard (#FH120) aircraft. They were flying in bad weather when the Harvard crashed 500 yards south-west of the Moncton aerodrome. RAF Leading Aircraftman Hector HYNDMAN also perished in this accident.
